guyana-russiaGuyanese will now be able to travel to Russia without a visa.

Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge and his russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov yesterday signed an agreement that will facilitate visa-free travel for their countries’ citizens.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the United Nations 70th general assembly.

Greenidge said the provision was aimed at encouraging movement between the two countries. Citizens will be able to travel between the two countries without a visa and stay for a maximum of six months at a time.

This new development will also see a major boost for the local tourism and business industries, Minister Greenidge said, adding that it would remove a major barrier and enhance business relations between the two states.

Guyana established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union in 1970. It maintained ties when Russia became the successor state, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
